The Buffalo National River is one of the few remaining un-dammed rivers in the United States. The park includes 95,000 acres that surround the flowing river.

Paddle FAQs

First time participating in a guided paddle tour? Wondering what to expect? Here are a few answers to frequently asked questions to help you prepare for your Guided Buffalo River Paddle Adventure.

  • No prior experience is necessary to join a 37 North Guided Buffalo River paddle. This activity is great for beginners - experienced adventurers will enjoy a chill day outdoors.

  • Kids 12 and under need to be on a tandem kayak with an adult. The Buffalo Outdoor Center recommends a person be at least six years old and able to swim, though there is no official National Park Service age limit for floating on or swimming in the Buffalo National River.

  • There are several benefits to having an expert guide for your Buffalo River excursion. In addition to safety certifications, your 37 North guide offers unique skills, experience, and location/activity knowledge to add value to your experience.

  • As with any 37 North organized adventure, we strive to make each experience accessible to all. If you or someone with your group needs personalized support, please contact us directly before making your reservation.

  • Canoe season for the [upper] Buffalo National River typically spans March - June, but can extend as late as August with the right conditions.

  • Glass containers are prohibited on the Buffalo National River.

    Ice chests must have the lids secured so that contents stay put in the event of an overturned boat.

    Open beverages must be placed in a floatable holder, such as a can koozie.

    You must have a mesh trash bag on board (1 per boat). Included with your rental.

    Each person must have a Personal Floatation Device (PFD) on board; children under age 12 MUST WEAR THEM while floating. PFDs are provided.

    Dogs must be on a leash in campgrounds and are not permitted on park trails unless official NPS trail information states otherwise.

    As of 2016, the NPS has adopted a “zero-tolerance” position on music played on radios, boomboxes and other devices that interfere with the natural quiet ambience of the wilderness surroundings.
